Mastering the Economics Essay: Structure, Stats, and Synthesis
Writing Like an Economist
The HSC Economics syllabus is unique because it is constantly evolving. A textbook published two years ago is already out of date regarding monetary policy decisions or global economic growth figures. To achieve a Band 6, your essays must reflect this dynamic reality.
The Three Pillars of a Band 6 Essay
1. Flawless Structure (The DPEAL Method)
Every paragraph must have a clear purpose. We recommend the DPEAL structure:
- Define the key economic concept.
- Point: State your argument clearly.
- Explain: Provide the economic theory and cause-and-effect chain (e.g., Lower interest rates $\rightarrow$ cheaper borrowing $\rightarrow$ increased consumption $\rightarrow$ higher AD).
- Apply: Use current statistics or a real-world example to prove your point.
- Link: Tie the paragraph back to the specific essay question.
2. Current Statistics
Saying "inflation is currently high" is a Band 4 statement. Saying "Headline inflation peaked at 7.8% in late 2022 before moderating to 5.4% in Q3 2023 due to tight monetary policy" is a Band 6 statement.
Keep a dedicated "Stats Bank" document that you update monthly with figures from the RBA, ABS, and global markets.
3. Synthesis and Evaluation
Top students don't just list effects; they evaluate them. Are the effects of a policy mostly short-term or long-term? Does fiscal policy conflict with monetary policy in the current environment? Showing that you understand the limitations of economic theory is crucial for top marks.
