What training machines and modelling finance taught me about teaching
Training a machine learning model teaches a discipline most tutors never develop. You cannot just show the model the right answer; you have to structure how it learns so understanding generalises beyond the example. Students who memorise past-paper answers and then fail on rephrased questions are experiencing what ML researchers call overfitting. At AurumQuanta, the AI-focused software engineering firm I founded, the techniques I use daily across CS, machine learning, and quantitative finance carry over directly to how I teach: diagnose the exact failure point, vary examples aggressively so patterns become principles, and treat every wrong answer as diagnostic data, so difficult and confusing topics become fully understood.
Three principles that shape every session
Break through mark plateaus
Students plateau at every level: a Year 8 stuck at 75%, a Year 10 at 82%, an HSC student at Band 5. The pattern is almost never effort; it is a specific reasoning gap that routine practice does not surface. Our first session is entirely diagnostic: we find the exact step where understanding breaks down, and rebuild from there. Marks lift when the underlying reasoning does, not before.
Learn and Understand instead of memorise
Students who memorise past-paper answers ace any question they have already seen and fail any question that has been rephrased. HSC/IB examiners know this and rephrase every year. The fix is teaching the structure beneath the content, so that an unfamiliar question reveals a familiar pattern. Slower in the first fortnight, dramatically faster after that.
Train exam-day performance
Preparing for exams by studying content instead of also for the exam itself results in students who know the material but can not retrieve it on the important day. We regularly run sessions under exam conditions (time pressure, sequential question difficulty, the specific feeling of seeing something unexpected) so that exam day is familiar rather than foreign.

Your first lesson is completely free with no obligation. We use it to understand your child's current level, identify specific areas for improvement, and show you exactly how our tutoring approach works. After the session, we'll provide honest feedback and a recommended learning plan.
We offer one-on-one tutoring in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Economics, and Business Studies for Years 7–12 (including HSC). We also provide targeted preparation programs for Selective High School entry, Opportunity Classes (OC), and NAPLAN across all tested year levels.
Lessons are conducted in-person at the student's home, at a public location such as a library, or online, whichever option suits each student best.
Each session length is tailored to the individual student. Factors including age, subject complexity, concentration, and how the student is progressing on the day, all shape how long each lesson is. Breaks can also be built into longer sessions to keep energy and concentration at their best. For students preparing for major exams, we can arrange extended or more frequent sessions as needed.
We recommend at least once a week to build consistent momentum and keep concepts fresh between school lessons. That said, frequency is flexible, some students prefer with a single session per week, while others thrive from more regular tutoring. We'll work with you to find a rhythm that suits your child's schedule and goals, and be flexible especially around exam periods.
Yes! After every session, your child receives notes summarising what was covered, along with targeted homework and practice questions. This ensures nothing is forgotten and gives students structured material to revise between sessions.
We keep parents informed every step of the way through a dedicated WhatsApp group that includes the student, parents, tutor, and tutor's assistant.
